Where Light, Reflection and Perception Meet
What if an artwork could change simply because you moved around it?
Bristol-based artist Peta Jacobs explores light, reflection and perception, creating mixed-media works that shift according to viewpoint, illumination and the space around them.
Her practice is informed by the relationship between art and quantum physics—particularly the idea that observation can influence what we perceive.
Rather than presenting a single fixed image, Peta creates works that reward movement and sustained attention. Reflections appear and disappear, light changes surfaces, and the experience of each artwork evolves as the viewer moves.
It is this sense of discovery that sits at the heart of her practice.
Making Quantum Questions Material
Following her PhD research, Making Quantum Questions Material, Peta has continued to investigate how complex ideas surrounding observation, uncertainty, duality and interconnectedness might be experienced physically through art.
Using materials such as resin, dichroic film, mirrors, prisms and printed surfaces, she creates works in which light becomes an active component.
The artwork is not experienced in isolation. It changes through its relationship with the viewer, the surrounding space and the conditions in which it is encountered.
Introducing Quantum Spin: Inner Light No. 1
Peta’s latest work available through CX2Art, Quantum Spin: Inner Light No. 1 , brings together intricate linear patterns with raised resin forms and shifting iridescent colour.
As the viewer changes position, the dichroic surfaces move through subtle flashes of pink, blue, green and gold. Forms that initially appear transparent become luminous, while reflections alter the underlying pattern.
A photograph can capture a moment within the work—but never its complete experience.
You need to move. Look again. Notice what changes.
