Artist Profile
Catherin Bennett
Catherin Bennett’s work explores the unconscious through surreal, symbolic, and evolving forms. Each piece reveals itself over time — shifting between what is seen and what is felt.
Rooted in surrealist traditions, her practice draws on irrational, mythical, and symbolic elements, shaped through an intuitive process that embraces unpredictability. Using techniques inspired by Rorschach imagery, forms emerge that are never fixed — remaining open to interpretation and personal meaning. Her visual language is informed by a long-standing interest in esoteric practices, primordial knowledge, and the interpretation of dreams, creating works that blur the boundary between the seen and unseen and evoke both unease and curiosity.
Based in Sydney, Bennett works across contemporary figurative, landscape, and abstract forms, using a multidisciplinary approach that spans a range of materials and surfaces — including salvaged and repurposed elements. Over time, her work has explored themes of environmental consciousness, human curiosity, and the pursuit of knowledge. These earlier explorations continue to inform her current focus on the unconscious, adding depth to the narratives within each piece.
Her process is fluid and responsive. Works evolve through layering, gesture, and emergence rather than a fixed plan, allowing meaning to surface gradually. Forms appear, dissolve, and reconfigure — reinforcing the idea that what lies beneath the surface often holds greater significance than what is immediately visible.
As founder of CX2Art, Bennett’s practice sits within a broader curatorial framework that brings together artists exploring different ways of seeing. Her work forms part of this evolving dialogue, complementing represented artists, where material instinct, conceptual structure, and the unconscious intersect.
Alongside her studio practice, Bennett has participated in solo and group exhibitions, art fairs, and public markets, and continues to share her knowledge through teaching. Her works are designed to be experienced over time — not fully understood at once, but returned to and reinterpreted — offering a lasting and evolving presence within a collection.
